Speeding fines in Romania 2026 – rates and limits

Speeding it is one of the most frequently sanctioned traffic violations in Romania. Speed ​​checks are frequent and fines can mean not only a financial penalty but also penalty points and a temporary suspension of your driving licence. In 2026 the rules remain clear, so it’s worth knowing how much you will pay and what consequences can await the driver.

Speeding fines in Romania: how does the points system work?

In Romania, for speeding, in addition to the financial penalty, penalty points are also applied. Their number depends on how much the legal speed has been exceeded. Once a certain threshold of points is exceeded, the driver can remain without a license for a certain period. The points system applies to both local and foreign drivers.

The penalty point limit in Romania is 15 points – after exceeding this the driving license is suspended for 30 days.

The number of penalty points depends on how many km/h the speed limit was exceeded. The following ranges apply:

• Exceeding speed up to 10 km/h – 0 penalty points

• Speeding of 11-20 km/h – 2 penalty points

• Speeding of 21-30 km/h – 3 penalty points

• Speeding of 31–40 km/h – 4 penalty points

• Exceeding the speed of 41 km/h and above – 6 penalty points

Speed ​​limits in Romania in 2026: motorways, expressways and cities

In Romania speed limits depend on the type of road and are clearly established by legislation:

• 50 km/h – in locality
• 90 km/h – extra-urban roads (local roads)
• 100 km/h – Extra-urban national DN roads
• 120 km/h – expressways (expressway)
• 130 km/h – motorways (motorway)

Limits can be reduced by road signs, especially in work zones, tunnels or in difficult weather conditions.

Fine for speeding in Romania: how much do you pay at the different thresholds?

The amount of the fine for speeding in Romania depends on how many km/h the limit was exceeded. The fine is calculated in fine points, then converted into an amount in RON.

Up to 10 km/h over the limit – fine: approx. 330–495 RON

• 11–20 km/h over the limit – fine: approx. 495–660 RON
• 21–30 km/h over the limit – fine: approx. 660–825 RON
• 31–40 km/h over the limit – fine: approx. 825–1,320 RON
• 41–50 km/h over the limit – fine: approx. 1,320–1,650 RON

Over 50 km/h over the limit – fine: more than RON 1,650 + mandatory license suspension (normally 90 days)

Can the fine be negotiated or reduced in Romania?

The fine in Romania is non-negotiable, but there is a reduced payment system. If you pay the fine within a set deadline (standard, up to 15 days after issuance), you can pay 50% of its value. After this deadline the driver is required to pay the full amount and in the subsequent administrative procedure the fine may be doubled.

Fine for speeding with a rental car: how does it work?

If the speeding occurred with a rented car, the fine goes first and foremost to the owner of the vehicle, i.e. the rental company. The company is obliged to indicate the data of the driver who used the vehicle during this interval. Ultimate responsibility always lies with the driver.

How does the rental company settle the speeding fine?

After receiving the fine, the rental company either transmits the driver’s data to the relevant authorities or pays the fine itself, then invoices the customer for the costs. In most cases an administrative fee is also added, according to the rental regulations. Information about the fine may appear even several weeks after the end of the lease.

Can the rental company remove the fine from your credit card without your consent?

YES. By signing the rental agreement, the driver agrees that the credit card will be charged for fines, administrative penalties and processing fees. The rental company does not need an additional agreement when charging if it acts according to the terms of the contract. In most cases, the amount needed to pay the fine is taken from the security deposit (deposit) that you pay at the start of the rental.
