Mercedes-Benz abandons the 4-cylinder engine for the new SL model

April 8, 2026 · 4 minute of reading

Mercedes-Benz is preparing a major change to its SL model range, the German brand’s iconic high-performance convertible. According to the latest information appearing in the specialized press, the automaker will withdraw the 4-cylinder engine from the SL range with the restyling scheduled for next year, in 2025. This decision comes in response to the new strict regulations relating to the Euro 7 emission standards, which will come into force shortly and which the current M139 unit cannot comply with.

The M139 4-cylinder engine: from performance to the limits

Until now, the Mercedes-AMG SL43 performance model was equipped with the M139 engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that impressed with its power and agility. With over 400 horsepower in various AMG configurations, this engine has been a cornerstone of the SL range’s compact performance offering an efficient combination of agility and fuel economy.

However, the M139 has a big problem: the legislative changes imposed by the new Euro 7 standards are extremely restrictive in terms of polluting emissions, and adapting the 4-cylinder engine to these standards has proven difficult or even impossible for Mercedes-Benz. Therefore, the German manufacturer decided to withdraw this engine from its portfolio for the SL model, in favor of more technologically advanced and environmentally friendly engines.

The M256 Evo engine, a modern and high-performance solution

To continue to offer top performance and align with new environmental requirements, Mercedes-Benz will introduce the M256 Evo engine under the hood of the next SL facelift. This unit is a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology that combines power and energy efficiency.

The M256 Evo engine, already used successfully on several Mercedes models in the premium segment, is appreciated for its excellent relationship between performance and low emissions. The integrated mild hybrid technology enables efficient energy recovery and cleaner operation in urban conditions or with light loads, making a decisive contribution to meeting Euro 7 requirements.

What impact will this change have on SL performance?

The move from a turbocharged 4-cylinder to a larger inline-six undoubtedly brings benefits in terms of refinement and power. The M256 Evo engine has a larger displacement and higher peak horsepower, resulting in improved performance, a more sophisticated engine sound and a more intense driving experience – qualities perfectly suited to a luxury model like the SL.

Furthermore, integrated hybrid technologies increase fuel efficiency and reduce polluting emissions, dimensions that are becoming increasingly important for manufacturers and customers. This change will help Mercedes-Benz keep the SL competitive in the premium convertible segment, while ensuring the car meets future environmental regulations.

Clear signal for future Mercedes-Benz strategies

The withdrawal of the 4-cylinder engine from the SL reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where energy efficiency and emissions reduction are becoming top priorities. It also clearly predicts that luxury sports models like the SL will no longer rely on small turbocharged engines, but on larger, more sophisticated units equipped with electrified systems.

As Mercedes-Benz expands its offering of electrified and hybrid models, this move heralds a period of profound transformation for sporty and luxury models. At the same time, it is an indication that future SL generations will offer a better balance between the classic dynamics of petrol propulsion and the benefits of implementing electrified technologies.

When will we see the new SL restyling on the market?

The facelifted version of the SL will be officially revealed in 2025, with the market launch soon after. Presumably, Mercedes-Benz will retain the principles of distinctive design and refinement that established the SL in the luxury roadster segment, but with advanced technological inserts, including in the engine compartment.

For convertible sports car enthusiasts, this facelift offers an attractive combination of elegance, cutting-edge technology and environmentally friendly performance, demonstrating the German brand’s continued evolution in the face of future challenges.

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz makes a strategic change to its SL model, eliminating the M139 4-cylinder engine due to the new Euro 7 regulations and replacing it with a more advanced and less polluting solution: the 3.0-liter M256 Evo six-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology. This decision reflects both legislative challenges and the trend towards electrification and efficiency, but promises to preserve the performance and prestige of the premium convertible. The future SL will combine traditional petrol engine power with modern technology, offering a refined and eco-friendly driving experience at the same time.
