From DEX Car you can rent a hybrid from €69/day (New Duster Hybrid 2025) and from €880/month, with a fleet of new cars up to 3 years old and with Full CASCO insurance included in the price.
What is a hybrid?
A hybrid car combines an internal combustion engine (ICE) with one or more electric motors and a traction battery. Energy is recovered through regenerative braking and is used when starting from a standstill and accelerating – exactly in typical Bucharest traffic conditions.
The most popular types of hybrid cars:
- MHEV (mild-hybrid, 48V): supports the combustion engine, improves the start/stop function and energy recovery.
- HEV (full-hybrid): can work briefly in EV mode at low speeds, without plug-in charging.
- PHEV (plug-in hybrid): it has a larger battery and is recharged via an (AC) socket.
What is the difference between mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid?
- MHEV = 48V + small battery (≈0.3–1.0 kWh) + electric torque assist, usually no all-electric «real driving» over useful distances.
- PHEV = large battery (≈10–25+ kWh) + plug-in charging + 30–90 km electric range (depending on model and conditions).
Technical differences:
Energy source: MHEV «charges» mainly from recuperation; PHEV from recovery + external (current).
Mass: PHEV is heavier → if you don’t charge it, consumption may increase.
City use: MHEV reduces consumption without a charging station; PHEV makes more sense when you have constant access to charging (parking/hotel/office).
How much does a hybrid actually consume in the city and on the road?
HEV (fully hybrid): 4,0–6.5 l/100 km in the city and 5.0–7.2 l/100 km outside the city / on the highway (depending on temperature, traffic jams, speed, load).
PHEV: with regular charging, possibly 0–3 l/100 km in the city; unloaded, typically 6.0–10.0 L/100 km (higher mass).
MHEV: indicative 5.5–8.0 l/100 km in the city and on the road 5.0–7.5 l/100 km (strongly dependent on the segment and gearbox).
What changes the most in consumption:
- cold starts and short distances (3–10 km),
- braking style (how much energy you recover),
- highway speeds >120–130 km/h (aerodynamic drag).
Hybrid vs electric – autonomy and “refueling” times.
HEV/MHEV: Typical range 600–1000+ km on a full tank, refueling in 3–5 minutes.
BEV (electric): actual range is often 250–450 km (less on the motorway and in winter); DC fast charging basically ~20–40 minutes for a useful charge, plus station planning.
In rental scenarios (arriving by plane, quick travel, time pressure), the HEV minimizes time loss: you are not dependent on charging infrastructure.
Is a hybrid suitable for a long journey (e.g. 800 km)?
Over approximately 800 km the HEV/MHEV drives without stopping «for charging»: typical consumption 5.0–7.2 l/100 km (depending on the segment) and refueling in 3–5 minutes.
In PHEVs, the battery helps initially (if you leave it charged), but after discharging you drive like a heavier hybrid/thermal; The PHEV makes more sense in the city + regular charging.
How much does it cost to rent a hybrid car from DEX Car?
Prices for renting hybrid/mild-hybrid vehicles at DEX Car start from €45/day and go up to €250/day; monthly rates start from €880/month. Examples from the official price list: New Duster Hybrid 2025: €69/day and €880/month, Renault Arkana 2026 €73/day and €1,200/month, Renault Austral-E Hybrid 2025: €62/day and €1,200/month, and a premium light hybrid can cost €250/day.
Hybrid models on offer
What are the driving differences between a hybrid car and a normal car?
The key difference is in the way energy is managed: stall and deceleration can be «optimized» by recovery.
Departure: electric torque from 0 → smoother starting in traffic jams.
Speed reduction: after taking your foot off the accelerator, you often feel a stronger pickup.
e-CVT transmission (on some HEVs): with strong acceleration the revs can remain higher (another characteristic compared to a classic automatic).
Mass: PHEVs/MHEVs are heavier → affect braking and tire wear.

Frequently asked questions – hybrid car rental
Can I rent a hybrid in Bucharest with pickup at Otopeni (Henri Coandă) airport?
Yes, DEX Car offers rental in Bucharest and the offer is also oriented towards airport transfers (Otopeni).
Do DEX Car hybrids have CASCO insurance included?
Yes — DEX Car communicates Full CASCO included in the price.
Which hybrid should I choose for the city (Bucharest) – HEV or PHEV?
For typical urban driving without charging, the best solution is HEV (full-hybrid): actually 4.0–6.5 l/100 km in the city and without the need for charging. The PHEV makes more sense if you have access to charging (parking/hotel/office).
Do I need to charge a hybrid?
HEV/MHEV: No, they recharge through recovery and operation of the propulsion system.
PHEV: you can also travel without charging, but then consumption usually increases (higher mass); the greatest benefits are obtained with regular loading.
