Car rental and insurance: check where you don’t pay extra

In most rental agencies the basic insurance (the so-called RCA) is already included in the price, so you don’t pay anything extra. The protection usually covers damage caused by third parties or ordinary road accidents. Free insurance gives you peace of mind, but it’s often worth considering an extension if you want to drive stress-free. Why is rental car insurance important?

Car insurance protects you from high costs in the event of an accident, scratches or damage to your vehicle. Without it, even a small damage could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars. What to do in case of collision with the rental car?

1. Stop the car and insure that everyone is safe – remember that the most important thing is the safety of you and your passengers.
2. Call the emergency number 112 if the police is necessary – according to Romanian legislation, if more than 2 vehicles are involved in the collision, it is mandatory to call the police. Pay attention to the provisions of the rental contract, it may contain the obligation to call the police in any case of collision.
3. Document the incident – photos, records, data of other drivers – the more the better, but you need at least photos of documents of all drivers and vehicles, as well as of damage to vehicles.

Is the insurance valid if you cross the borders of Romania?

Not always. Many rental companies require prior authorization to travel abroad, and some charge an additional fee for this. If you want to travel outside Romania, make sure that your policy is also valid in other countries, otherwise it may not cover damages in the event of an accident.

What insurances are included in the standard car rental contract?

Most often it is included in the price RCA (car civil liability) AND CDWwhich means limiting your liability for damage to the car. Sometimes the package also includes anti-theft insurance (TP). This is basic protection – sufficient for everyday driving, but with a certain deductible (own co-payment).

How and when to report car damage?

The damage should be reported as soon as possible, ideally at the moment the damage is discovered. Contact the rental company, describe the situation and prepare photos. When returning the car, the employee will still carry out a check, so reporting in advance brings advantages and speeds up the whole procedure. Remember to pay attention to the employee’s behavior after delivery of the vehicle, check whether he has carefully inspected the car and noticed any irregularities: this way you will avoid further problems.
