Failure to prioritize it is one of the most common and at the same time most dangerous traffic violations. In Romania this phenomenon is taken very seriously because it directly puts the safety of road users at risk. With the new year, many motorists are wondering what the fine is for not giving the right of way, whether penalty points are worth it and whether it is possible to pay a lower penalty if you pay quickly. In this article we explain what they mean exactly Road regulations in Romania for the year 2026.
Forcing priority in Romania: what exactly does it mean according to the legal provisions?
In Romania, forcing priority means not respecting the obligation to give precedence to another vehicle or pedestrian, according to the rules of road traffic (for example, signs, traffic lights or general rules). This involves overtaking before the vehicle or pedestrian has the right of way, creating a risk of direct collision. Priority in traffic is regulated, among other things, by road signs, light signals and the right-of-way rule in places without signs.
The fine for forcing priority in Romania in 2026 – what is the amount of the fine?
For forcing priority in Romania, a driver can receive a fine ranging from approx 750 and 1500 leiwhich in practice corresponds to a sanction of traffic violations from the middle class to the upper class. The actual amount of the fine is determined by the police or the court and depends on the circumstances of the crime. In Romania there is a practice of reducing the fine if paid quickly.
How does it work in practice? Two amounts should be mentioned in the fine report: a smaller one, for prompt payment, and the full amount, if payment is made later. If you pay the fine within, as a rule, 15 days from the date of drafting the report, you will only be able to pay 50% of the initial amount of the fine.
Classification of traffic offenses in Romania and application of priority
Violating the right of way on the road is considered a moderate or serious traffic violation. In the Romanian sanctioning system there are different classes of contravention (I–V), from the lightest to the most serious, each is assigned a number of penalty points and a fine amount. Priority enforcement is most commonly classified as a class of offenses with a higher number of points and higher penalties.
Does driving license suspension apply to force priority in Romania?
Yes, in the most serious cases a police check can lead to temporary arrest or suspension of the driving licence. In practice, for serious violations, including priority enforcement, the police may seize the license on the spot, and then the case is forwarded for further administrative proceedings.
How many penalty points are awarded for forcing priority onto the road?
Forcing road priority results in penalty points being added to the driver’s account. In Romania each type of violation is evaluated in points which, accumulated on the account, can lead to sanctions, including temporary suspension of the driving license, in case of exceeding the threshold. For forcing priority in Romania 6 penalty points are assigned.
It is one of the most serious traffic violations, therefore, in addition to penalty points, it can also be associated with: a large fine and in some situations the temporary suspension of your driving license.
You can appeal a fine in Romania on the driver’s rights
Yes, a driver in Romania has the right to contest the fine by submitting a complaint or appeal to the competent administrative court, within the period established by law, if he believes that the fine has been applied unfairly or in violation of the law. When submitting your appeal it is advisable to collect evidence, such as photographs or witness statements.
