The most expensive Mercedes – A jewel worth 142 million dollars

the most expensive mercedes

In the world of luxury cars and avid collectors, a rare automobile with a fascinating history can command exorbitant prices. Thus, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe recently became the most expensive car ever sold at auction, setting a new world record. This automotive masterpiece, a true gem on four wheels, was auctioned for the exorbitant sum of 142 million dollars, far surpassing the previous record held by a Ferrari 250 GTO.

The roots of a revolutionary design

The history of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé has its roots in the glorious years of post-war motor sports. After Juan Manuel Fangio captured the Formula 1 world title in 1954 with the 300 SL, chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut laid the foundations for an ambitious new project: the development of a racing car capable of dominating the 1955 season.

The birth of a performance monster

The result of Uhlenhaut’s work was the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, a true performance monster for its time. It was equipped with a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated 8-cylinder engine that developed 302 horsepower, far exceeding the standards of the time. The gearbox was a 5-speed manual and the overall weight was only 998 kilograms, ensuring considerable agility.

Uhlenhaut, also known as «the pilot engineer», was not satisfied with simply designing the car, but personally tested it on the tracks. Legend has it that after a sumptuous lunch on the Nurburgring circuit, Uhlenhaut left his mask to world champion Fangio himself, completing a lap 3 seconds faster than him. Uhlenhaut’s phrase became famous: «Fangio still needs training.»

The tragedy of Le Mans and the birth of a myth

Despite the remarkable performance of the 300 SLR, its fate was sealed by tragedy. In 1955, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a terrible accident killed the driver Pierre Levegh and 83 spectators. This tragic accident led Mercedes-Benz to withdraw from motorsports.

But before retiring, Uhlenhaut developed two closed-cockpit 300 SLR prototypes, known as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé. These four-wheeled jewels were named after the engineer in homage to his extraordinary creations.

Unique features and revolutionary design

The two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé prototypes stood out with unique features and a revolutionary design. One of the fundamental characteristics was the vertical opening of the doors, known as «gull-wing». This ingenious solution was later adopted by other iconic models, such as the DeLorean DMC-12 from «Back to the Future» or the Tesla Model

Uhlenhaut’s company car

One of the two prototypes became Uhlenhaut’s company car, in which he commuted between Stuttgart and Munich. The engineer is said to have covered the distance of 220 kilometers in just an hour, taking advantage of his unique car’s top speed of 300 km/h.

A rare masterpiece, on public display

Although both prototypes were preserved by Mercedes-Benz, one of them was exhibited at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, allowing the public to admire this rare masterpiece. The other example was part of the private Mercedes-Benz Classic collection, along with 1,100 other historic cars.

The world record and the mystery of the anonymous buyer

In May 2022, one of the two prototypes of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was auctioned at an event organized by the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the auction house RM Sotheby’s. The auction attracted the attention of car and art collectors from around the world and the car sold for the astronomical sum of $142 million, setting a new world record.

The buyer preferred to remain anonymous, but is known to be a classic car enthusiast, not just an investor. British classic car dealer Simon Kidston, who brokered the deal, said: «The buyer is first and foremost an enthusiast, not an investor. He’s someone who simply loves the car.»

Mercedes-Benz Fund for Education and the Environment

Despite the colossal sum raised, Mercedes-Benz’s motivation for selling one of the two Uhlenhaut Coupé prototypes was not strictly financial. The German company announced that the money will be used to create a fund that will finance research and education projects related to the environment and decarbonization, in partnership with a specialized company.

The passion for vintage cars: between investment and pure love

The case of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé brings back to the fore the debate on the motivations behind the passion for vintage cars. Some see them as an investment, while others are driven by pure love for these four-wheeled jewels.

Alin Ionescu, known as «Mașinistul», enthusiast of classic cars and owner of a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 320 CE, highlights the difficulty of establishing the right price for such cars. “The classic car market is not always predictable, and list values are often contradicted both by cars undervalued by those who don’t know what they are selling, but also by those who want a particular car so badly that they are willing to pay anything for it.”

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé is an automotive masterpiece that transcends the usual boundaries of financial value. This four-wheeled jewel represents a unique combination of performance, revolutionary design and a fascinating story linked to Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the pilot engineer who left an indelible mark on the world of racing cars. The record sum of 142 million dollars set at auction demonstrates that the passion for vintage cars can reach unsuspected heights, surpassing simple financial considerations.
